Reichstag Building is a historical place of Germany located in the capital city of the country called Berlin. Year in and year out it has been marked by some very defining incidences or changes. Its location must be explained by looking at the history of Berlin during the period of the Cold War.
The Division of Berlin
Following World War II, Berlin was divided into four zones controlled by the Allied powers: the US, Great Britain, France and the Soviet Union. This was due to political relationship between these countries. With Soviet Union controlling the eastern zone, the city became East Berlin, the other three made West Berlin.

The historic building – the Reichstag – became located in the zone dividing East and West Berlin. In the period of the Cold War, the actual division of the city along the seated location was marked physically by the construction of the Berlin Wall, which lay only several hundred of meters north of the Reichstag building.
Because of its location close to the state border, immediately adjoined to the territory of East Berlin. Nonetheless in its real sense, this was a closed library to the inhabitants of the city since it was restricted to the sector around the Wall.
Reunification and the Role of the Reichstag
In 1989, some occurrences that contributed to the bringing down of the famous Berlin Wall and the eventual uniting of East Germany and West Germany. The German post re-unification government which was tasked with the reunification processes recommended the Reichstag building as the seat to the reunified German parliament.
Due to the fire, Reichstag went through a major renovation in 1995 by the British architect Norman Foster The project involved reintroducing features typical of old parliaments and adapting the interior for its current function. Moreover, to complement the work of Marx, Foster created the beautiful glass façade, and the glass dome that predetermines openness and provides a great view of Berlin.
Visiting the Reichstag Today
Now the building of Reichstag is one of the main attractable objects for tourists in Berlin. Tourists can check out the luxurious glass cupola, discover history of Germany, and have a great look at the cupola. However, because of the popularity of this site, there may be a rash of visitors to be expected, so it is better to arrange for a visit in advance.
