Hello and welcome to our blog where we will examine the subject of the Berlin Blockade and Airlift and its influence on the world’s post-World War II global politics. This became international crisis of 1948-1949 which determined the subsequent state of Berlin and had an impact on the entire postwar period. Follow us and let us share success stories and struggles experienced during this vital phase.

Background: The Berlin Blockade

In the aftermath of World War II, Germany was divided into four occupation zones controlled by the Allied powers: the United States, Soviet Union, United Kingdom and France. Like Paris, Berlin was divided into four sectors it was located in the Soviet zone . Soviet–Western Allied relations worsened and, on June 24, 1948, the USSR began the Berlin Blockade.

The Berlin Blockade was an effort to stop the western allies from getting to their zones in Berlin which this included food, fuel and medicine. It made a lot of sense for the Soviet Union to capture the whole city and push the western allies out of their sectors.

The Response: The Berlin Airlift

The western powers would not abandon their concessions, and this lead to such a mammoth logistic problem. Concerning this, they devised the Berlin Airlift, whereby exclusive delivery of goods into the entire city of Berlin was by air.

From June 1948 to September, 1949, there was a large scale airlifting of supplies to West Berlin. The British and the Americans took a very active part in the airlift, delivering food, coal and even Christmas presents.

The Success of the Airlift

Nevertheless, a lot of difficulties were observed, in spite of which the Berlin Airlift could be considered one of the most successful undertakings. The policy of the Western Allies as a whole, made sure that people of West Berlin did not starve and that they were warm enough in such a cold winter. Thus, an average of a plane landed in Berlin every three minutes, bringing in necessities.

The Airlift thus turned into a symbol of hope and the will to survive in the social unconscious of the West Berlin population; nothing to do that pilots could sacrifice their lives. It depicted the firm stand by the western allies to defend democracy and liberty against soviet expansionism.

The Defeat of the Blockade

The Berlin Blockade however did not meet the intended goals. Though the Soviet Union aimed to expel the Western Allies from Berlin, their constant determination in the Berlin Airlift killed that plan and ensured the Allies remain in Berlin.

Negotiating the icing of the cake had been to no avail, and hence the Soviet Union raised it on 12 th of May, 1949. It can be considered as the success for the Western Allies which was also the turning point in the early phase of the Cold War.

Legacy: Shaping the Cold War

Conclusively, it can be argued that the Berlin Blockade and Airlift played a significant role in shaping the future of the Cold War. It solidified the division between East and West and prompted the establishment of two separate German states: two Germanies; the Federal Republic of Germany: often referred to as West Germany; and the German Democratic Republic: often referred to as East Germany.

The successful Berlin airlift did do the trick in sending a signal to the rest of the world including the soviet Union of the determination of the Western Allies to stand firm to overcome soviet intimidation. It also brought to the need for a permanent fix for the divided city of Berlin.

Conclusion

The Berlin Blockade and the subsequent Airlift was an important, early historical event of the post Second World War period in that the determination of the Western Allies were on full display. Not only did the mission help pave the West Berlin’s fate but also offered consequences that shaped the future progress of Cold War.
